East CokerBackgroundMy mother was born in East Coker and almost all her ancestors originated from, or very near, that location. My family tree is elsewhere on this website and, during investigation of my mother's line, it became necessary to extract many entries from the East Coker Parish Registers. To save time and travel, my wife Rosemary purchased microfiche copies of some of the registers from Somerset Record Office (SRO). However, since I started examining them, I have purchased the remainder and now visit the SRO mainly to confirm dubious entries. Over time the extracts have become transcriptions and we decided to make them available to everyone by placing them in the public domain. This website is being used to hold the work in progress but as the transcriptions are finalised they are being placed on the Somerset pages of GENUKI to ensure their long-term security. FreeREGNote that all the East Coker parish registers have been transcribed by Jeffery Mance and stored on FreeREG in a searchable form. If users want to search for a specific register entry, I recommend searching FreeREG. If however, users are unsure of just what search criteria to use, then the transcripts below are available for browsing. The period of the 1783 - 1796 general register (microfiche reference D/P cok.e 2/1/4) overlaps with that of the 1765 - 1812 general register (D/P cok.e 2/1/3). Also, the 1783 - 1796 general register consists of pre-printed forms for baptism, marriage and burial bound together in one volume. The period 1783 - 1796 coincides with that of the Stamp Act of 1783 [23 Geo. III, 67], which introduced a tax on baptisms, marriages and burials of three old pence (3d). The Act came into effect on 1 October 1783, and lasted for 11 years, until 30 September 1794. Paupers were exempt from the tax, and the tax on their baptisms, marriages and burials would have been paid by the parish, which may explain why their entries at East Coker for this period were recorded in the 1765 - 1812 general register, whilst the pre-printed forms were reserved for those who paid the tax. TranscriptionsThe transcriptions which follow have been made from microfiche purchased privately from the Somerset Record Office and with their permission subject to certain conditions of use. Note that, during transcription, no attempt has been made to correct or interpret entries. Spelling has been left as written in the originals, and unreadable characters have been replaced or followed by a query (?). D/P cok.e 2/9/1SRO fiche D/P cok.e 2/9/1 has been transcribed and the following baptisms, marriages and burials are available below. Note that this fiche is of a typewritten transcript of the General 1560-1714 register made by C.A.T. Fursdon in October 1926. This was an immensely valuable and impressive work for which we should all be grateful. D/P cok.e 2/1/4SRO fiche D/P cok.e 2/1/4 has been transcribed and the following baptisms, marriages and burials are available below. Note that although burial entries in the register extend to 1796, no baptisms were recorded after 1793, and no marriages after 1794. D/P cok.e 2/1/19SRO fiche D/P cok.e 2/1/19 has been transcribed and the following burials are available below. CensusThe census records have been transcribed from a number of convenient sources. Note that columns in the census unrelated to genealogy have not been included, e.g., unoccupied houses. However, folio, page and, where available, schedule numbers, have been included to allow cross reference to the original census records.
