ALLER, a parish in the hundred of SOMERTON, county of SOMERSET, 6 miles (W.) from Somerton, containing 454 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £36. 15., and in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of Emanuel College, Cambridge. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew. At this place, Guthrum, the Danish chief, received baptism, under the sponsorship of Alfred the Great, after the famous victory obtained by that monarch over the Danes at Ethandune. Aller Moor was the scene of a battle between the royalists and the parliamentarians, in 1645. Dr. Ralph Cudworth, author of "The Intellectual System of the Universe," was born here, in 1617.
