AMBERLEY, a parish in the hundred of WEST EASWRITH, rape of ARUNDEL, county of SUSSEX, 5 miles (N. N. E.) from Arundel, containing, with the hamlet of Rockham, 548 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, with that of Houghton united, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester, rated in the king's books at £7. 5. 7., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Chichester. The church has a nave of Norman, and a chancel of early English, architecture, separated by a Norman arch much enriched. The river Arun runs through this parish: on its banks are considerable remains of an ancient castle, which belonged to the Bishops of Chichester, now occupied as a farm-house.
