AMBLE, a township in that part of the parish of WARKWORTH which is in the eastern division of MORPETH ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 9 miles (S.E.) from AInwick, containing 197 inhabitants. There are valuable and extensive mines of coal in this township. The village is pleasantly situated on an eminence near the mouth of the river Coquet, and commands an extensive view of the sea: it was anciently of much greater importance, as is evident from the discovery of circular foundations of houses, of unhewn and uncemented stones, of British origin, and of Roman coins; a paved causeway was also discovered, a few years since, extending in a direction towards the old bed of the Coquet. Here was anciently a monastery, subordinate to Tynemouth priory, near the ruins of which several human bones were found a few years ago.
