APPLETHWAITE, a township in the parish of
WINDERMERE, KENDAL ward, county of WESTMORLAND,
5 miles (S. E.) from Ambleside, containing 417
inhabitants. There are two bobbin-mills in the township,
which is interspersed with several beautiful villas,
among which is Calgarth Park, commenced in 1789,
by Dr. Watson, Bishop of Llandaff, who occupied it
till his death, in 1816; his remains were interred at
Bowness. The children of this township are entitled to
the advantages of the charity school at Bowness.
