ASKERTON, a township in the parish of LANERCOST- ABBEY, ESKDALE ward, county of CUMBERLAND, 6 miles (N.N.E.) from Brampton, containing 5 03 inhabitants. The castle, situated on the eastern bank of the Cambeck, was a small tower building with lofty turrets, but it has long been in ruins. Askerton comprises the ancient parish of Kirk-Cambeck, the church of which was destroyed by the Scots in the reign of Edward II., and the tithes ave held on lease from the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle: the inhabitants repair to the church of Lanercost for the performance of ecclesiastical rites.
