ASPEDEN, a parish in the hundred of EDWINSTREE, county of HERTFORD, f of a mile (S.) from Buntingford, containing 455 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Huntingdon, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £15- 5.2g., and in the patronage of the Earl of Hardwicke. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The river Rib, which falls into the Lea near Hertford, flows through this parish. W. and R. Freeman, in 1668, and Mrs. Cater, in 1704, gave land for the education of children; and RFreeman assigned an additional plot of land for clothing them. In 1684, Dr. Seth Ward, Bishop of Sarum, founded an almshouse for two men and two women, and endowed it with £41. 12. per annum.
