ASTON-TIRROLD, a parish in the hundred of MORETON, county of BERKS, 3 miles (S. W. by W.) from Wallingford, containing 355 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £10. 12.11., and in the patronage of the President and Fellows of Magdalene College, Oxford. The church is dedicated to St. Michael. Bishop Gibson supposed this to be the place called in the Saxon Chronicle Aescesdune, where Ethelred I. and his brother Alfred defeated the Danes, in 871; but Gough, with greater probability, considers this battle to have been fought at Ashdown Park, near East Ilsley. There is a small endowment for the instruction of poor children.
