ATTENBOROUGH, a parish in the southern division of the wapentake of BROXTOW, county of NOTTINGHAM, 6 miles (S.W.) from Nottingham, containing, with the hamlets of Chilwell and Toton, 1031 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of Bramcote annexed, in the archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £4. 15., endowed with £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of Sir F. Foljambe. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The rivers Trent .and Erewash run through the parish. In the hamlet of Toton is a chalybeate spring. Attenborough is the birthplace of Henry Ireton, the son-in-law of Cromwell; and Lord Deputy of Ireland in the time of the Commonwealth.
