ATTERCLIFFE, a chapelry in that part of the parish of SHEFFIELD which is in the southern division of the wapentake of STRAFFORTH-and-TICKHILL, West riding of the county of YORK, 1 mile (N.E. by E.) from Sheffield, containing, with the hamlet of Darnall, 3172 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, m the archdeaconry and diocese of York, endowed with £400 private benefaction, £400 royal bounty, and £3000 parliamentary grant, and in the 'patronage' of the Vicar of Sheffield. The chapel is dedicated to the Holy Jesus. A new church, in the later style of English architecture, was erected in 1822, at the expense of £11,700. 5., defrayed by a grant from the parliamentary commissioners. There are places ot worship for Calvinists and Wesleyan Methodists, A Sunday school is endowed with £13. 9. 6. per annum. Almshouses have been erected for four poor people, but they are not endowed.
