BARKING, a parish in the hundred of BOSMERE-and-CLAYDON, county of SUFFOLK, If mile (S.W.) from Needham- Market,, containing, with the chapelry of Needham-Market, 1687 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £27. 10. 7,, and in the patronage of the Earl of Ashburnham. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is also a chapel of ease at Darmsden, in this parish. In 1650, Francis Theobald bequeathed £30 per annum for the endowment of a free school, in which seventeen children are taught.
