BEAMISH, a township in that part of the parish
of CHESTER-le-STREET which is in the middle division
of CHESTER ward, county palatine of DURHAM, 7 miles
(S. S. W.) from Gateshead, containing, with part of
Tanfield Colliery, 1643 inhabitants. There is a great
quantity of coal in this township, which also contains
some iron-ore.
