BERRIER, a township in the parish of GREYSTOCK, LEATH ward, county of CUMBERLAND, 8 miles (W. by S.) from Penrith, containing, with the township of Murrah, 128 inhabitants. Mary Jackson, in 1799, left £230 in reversion, to found and endow a school for girls, which, having become the subject of a lawsuit, was confirmed by the court of Chancery, in 1811, and the school was built by subscription, in 1828, on ground given by the Hon. Henry Howard, of Corby Castle, and endowed with £ 5 per annum, the remainder of the property having been expended in the lawsuit.
