BERWICK (ST-JOHN), a parish in the hundred of CHALK, county of WILTS, 5J miles (E. by S.) from Shaftesbury, containing 386 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £26. 13. 4., and in the patronage of the Warden and Fellows of New College, Oxford. About a mile southward" from the village is an intrenchment, called Winkelbury Camp, supposed to have been constructed by the Romans.
