BIDDLESTON, a township in the parish of ALLENTON, western division of COOUETDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 7 miles (N. W. by W.) from Rothbury, containing 166 inhabitants. The manor was granted, in 1272, to Sir Walter Selby, Knt., and has ever since continued in the possession of his descendants. King James held this ancient family in such high estimation that he bestowed the honour of Knighthood upon five of its members. The manor-house, a commodious stone building of modern erection, occupies the summit of a gentle declivity, commanding, on the south, a fine prospect of the vale of Coquet.
