BLACKFORD, a chapelry in the parish of WEDMORE, hundred of BEMPSTONE, county of SOMERSET 5 miles (S. by W.) from Axbridge. The population is returned with the parish. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells, and in the patronage of the Dean of Wells. The chapel is of recent erection, towards defraying the expense of which the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels gave £200, The manor was given as part of the endowment of Bruton Hospital, by Hugh Saxey, Esq., the founder; and two boys are annually sent from this place to be educated at that institution.
