BOLTON-upon-SWALE, a chapelry in the parish of CATTERICK, eastern division of the wapentake of GILLING, North riding of the county of YORK, l mile (N. E.) from Catterick, containing 100 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry pi Richmond, and diocese of Chester, endowed with £600 royal bounty, and £1000 parliamentary grant, and m the patronage of the Crown. The chapel, dedicated to St. Mary, contains a neat pyramidal tablet, erected by subscription, in 1743, over the grave of Henry Jenkins, a native of this place, who died at the age of one hundred and sixty-nine, the oldest Englishman on record.
