BOXTED, a parish in the Colchester division of the
hundred of LEXDEN, county of ESSEX, 5 miles (N.) from
Colchester, containing 793 inhabitants. The living is a
discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Colchester,
and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at
£7. 13. 9., endowed with £200 private benefaction, and
£200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Bishop
of London. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The
navigable river Stour runs on the northern side of this
parish.
