BRACKENTHWAITE, a township in the parish of
LORTON, ALLERDALE ward above Darwent, county of
CUMBERLAND, 8 miles (W. by S.) from Keswick, containing
140 inhabitants. The neighbourhood abounds
with beautiful scenery, being picturesquely diversified
with the lakes Loweswater, Crummock, and Butter-'
mere, and the lofty mountain Grassmoor: lead-ore has
been obtained in the township.
