BRETTENHAM, a parish in the hundred of COSFORD, county of SUFFOLK, 3J miles (N. N.W.) from Bildeston, containing 280 inhabitants. The .living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £11. 3. ll., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. This was probably the site of the Roman station Combfetonium; though some have endeavoured to fix it at Brettenham in Norfolk, where some Roman coins have been found.
