BRIERDEAN, a township in the parish of EARSDON,
eastern division of CASTLE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND,
6 miles (N. N. E.) from Newcastle, containing
52 inhabitants. There are quarries of excellent
freestone, and a colliery in the township: here are also
the ruins of a strong fortress.
