BROOKESBY, a parish in the eastern division of the hundred of GOSCOTE, county of LEICESTER, 6 miles (W. S. W.) from Melton-Mowbray, containing 23 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Leicester, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £5, 12. 6., and in the patronage of Miss Wright. The church is dedicated to St."Michael. Here was formerly a village, but there are now only a private mansion and a farm-house. The river Wreake.has, been made navigable hence to Oakham. George Villiers, the first duke of Buckingham of that name, and the favourite of James I., was born here, in 1592, at the family mansion.
