BROUGHTON (GREAT), a township in the parish
of BRIDEIURK, ALLERDALE ward below Derwent, county
of CUMBERLAND, 4 miles (W.) from Cockermouth, containing
435 inhabitants. The village lies on the southern
slope of an eminence rising from the river Derwent.
Mr. Joseph Ashley built an almshouse for four,poor
women, and a school-room for the children of Great and
Little Broughton, endowing them by will dated July
18th, 17S5, the former with £8, and the latter with
£20. 10., per annum) between seventy and eighty children
are taught gratuitously, and the master's fixed
stipend is usually augmented by subscription.
