BUBWITH, a parish, partly in the liberty of ST-PETER-of-YORK, but chiefly in the Holme-Beacon division of the wapentake of HARTHILL, East riding of the county of YORK, comprising the townships of Breighton, Bubwith, Foggathorpe, Gribthorpe with Willitoft, Harlthorpe, and SpaldingtOn, and containing 1455 inhabitants, of which number, 540 are in the township of Bubwith, 7 miles (N.N.W.) from Howden. The living is a discharged vicarage, held in medieties; the first, which is rated in the king's books at £7. 2. 6., is in the archdeaconry of the East riding, and diocese of York, and in the patronage of the Crown; the second, rated at £8.0.5., is in the peculiar jurisdiction and patronage of the Dean and Chapter of York. The -church is dedicated'to All Saints. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Me-1 thodists; The village is situated close to the river Derwent, which is crossed by a stone bridge of ten arches, built in 1793, and is the birthplace of Nicholas de Bubwith, Bishop of Bath and Wells, who was one of the English prelates that were present at the council of Constance, in 1415.
