BUCKLAND-BREWER, a parish (formerly a market-town) in the hundred of SHEBBEAR, county of DEVON, 4 miles (W. by N.) from Great Torrington, containing 1043 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of East Purtford annexed, in the archdeaconry of Barnstaple, and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £25.17.3., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church, dedicated to St. Mary and St. Benedict has an enriched Norman door, and had anciently a small college, dedicated to St. Michael, attached to it, the revenue of which at the dissolution, was £ 8. 7. 6. A part of the manor was anciently given by Lord Brewer to the abbot of Dunkeswell, who obtained'for this place a market and a fair; the former has been discontinued, but two fairs are held, one on Whit-Monday, and the other on the 2nd of November.
