BUILDWAS, a parish in the Wellington division of the hundred of BRADFORD (South), county of SALOP, 4 miles (N. N.B.) from Much Wenlock, containing 240 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the peculiar jurisdiction and patronage of W. Moseley, Esq; The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Buildwas is celebrated for the ruins of an abbey, founded in 1135, by Roger, Bishop of Chester, in honour of St. Mary and St. Chad, for monks of the order of Savjgny, who were subsequently incorporated with a society of Cistercians: at the time of the dissolution, the establishment consisted of about twelve monks, whose revenue was rated at £129. 6. 10. The ruins occupy a beautiful situation on the southern bank of the Severn, and consist principally of the outer walls of the nave, traiisept, and tower of the cruciform church: the massive pillars of the nave, with capitals in the Norman style, support handsome pointed arches, and, there are several circular arches; the western end is overspread with a thick cluster of ivy: a respectable farm-house occupies part of the site. Nearly opposite these ruins is a very handsome cast-iron bridge, constructed in 1796, on the site of an ancient stone bridge,, which was swept away .by a flood in the preceding year: the span of the arch is one hundred and thirty feet, and the height twenty-four: the outer ribs rise to the top of the railing, and are connected with the lower ribs by dovetailed king-posts.
