BURSLEDON, a chapelry in the parish of HOUND, in that part of the hundred of BISHOP'S-WALTHAM which is in the Portsdown division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 4 miles (B.S.B.) from Southampton, containing 473 inhabitants. The chapel is dedicated to St. Leonard. This chapelry lies at the . head of the sestuary of the river Hamble, about three miles, from Southampton water, which is crossed by a bridge on the road from Southampton to Portsmouth. Several large vessels have been built here for the navy, the creek being very commodious for that purpose, and the water deep enough for eighty-gun ships. Bursledon is within the jurisdiction of the Cheyney Court held at Winchester every Thursday, for the recovery of debts to any amount.
