BURSTEAD (GREAT), a parish in the hundred of BARSTABLE, county of ESSEX, 2 miles (S.S.E.) from Billericay, containing 1861 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage; in the archdeaconry of Essex, arid diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £17. 6. 8., and in the patronage of the Rev. Edward Evans. The church is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, About a mile north of it are some earthworks, enclosing a space of about four acres, and called Blunt's Walls, where various Roinan remains have been dug up. There is a free school at Billericay for the benefit of the children of the whole parish.
