BURTON, a hamlet in the parish of WARCOP, EAST ward, county of WESTMORLAND,, 5g miles (N. W.) from Brough, containing 52 inhabitants. There are leadworks at Kirsty Bank, in this township. This is the birthplace of Christopher Bainbridge, Archbishop of York in the reign of Henry VIII.j having been sent on a diplomatic mission, to Rome by that monarch, the pontijBF created him cardinal of St. Praxis: he was poi-. soned in 1511, by his Italian steward, with whom he had quarrelled, and was interred at Rome.
