BURTON-AGNES, a parish in the wapentake of DICKERING, East riding of the county of YORK, comprising the townships of Burton-Agnes, Gransmoor, Haisthorp, and Thornholm, and containing 609 inhabitants, of which number, 321 are in the township of Burton-Agnes, 6 miles (N. E. by E.) from Great Driffield. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of the East riding, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £20. 6. 3., and in the patronage of the Rev. T. A. Mills. The church is dedicated to St. Martin. Adjoining it is an old building, used as a school-room, in which between thirty and forty children of both sexes, are taught English gratuitously, from a bequest of £200 by Richard Green, in 1563, which having been invested in land, now produces £ 50 a year: this sum is divided into three parts, one of them being given to the schoolmaster, another to the poor, and the third expended in repairing the church. An hospital for four poor widows was founded, and endowed with an annuity of £20. 10., by the widow of the late William Boynton, Esq.
