BUTTERWORTH, a township in that part of the parish of ROCHDALE which is in the hundred' of SALTORD, county palatine of LANCASTER, 4 miles (E.) from Rochdale, containing 5554 inhabitants. A school at Milnrow, in this township, was built by Alexander Butr terworth, about 1720, and endowed with a rent-charge of £20, to which £7 per annum, accumulated during a /vacancy in the school from the year 1789 to 1796, has been: added, and for this twenty children are taught free. There .are also schools at Hollingworth and Ogden, in each of which twenty children are taught and partly clothed: that at Hollingworth is endowed with an estate producing £26 a year, and .that at Ogden with one producing £54 a year, both devised by John Hill, in 1727.
