CALTON, a township in that part of the parish of
KIRKBY-in-MALHAMDALE which is in the eastern division
of thewapentake of STAINCLIFFE-and-EWCROSS, West
riding of the county of YORK, 7 miles (S. E. by E.) from
Settle, containing 76 inhabitants. There is a school
with a small endowment. This is the birthplace of
Major-General Lambert, one of the principal parliamentary
leaders in the civil war.
