CANTLEY, a parish in the southern division of
the wapentake of STRAFFORTH-and-TICKHILL, West
riding of the county of YORK, 4 miles (B. by S.) from
Doncaster, containing 577 inhabitants. The living is a
discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of
York, rated in the king's books at £ 6. 6. 5., endowed
with £200 private benefaction, and £400 royal
bounty, and in the patronage of J. W. Childers, Esq.
The church is dedicated to St. Wilfrid. In this parish
is a cold bath, called "St.Catherine's well," that attracts
numerous visitors, for whom requisite accommodation
has been prepared.
