CARLTON, a hamlet in the parish of GEDLING, southern division of the wapentake of THURGARTON, county of NOTTINGHAM, 3 miles (E. N. E.) from Nottingham, containing 1345 inhabitants. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. This is an extensive hamlet; the inhabitants are chiefly employed in the manufacture of hosiery. It is in the honour of Tutbury, duchy of Lancaster, and within the jurisdiction of a court of pleas held at Tutbury every third Tuesday, for the recovery of debts under 40s.
