CAUNTON, a parish in the northern division of the wapentake of THURGARTON, county of NOTTINGHAM, 5 miles (N. W. by N.) from Newark, containing 467 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage with Beesthorpe, in the peculiar jurisdiction and patronage of the Chapter of the Collegiate Church of Southwell, rated in the king's books at £4. 2. 1. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew. Various attempts to discover coal have been made in this parish, but hitherto without success.
