CHALTON, or CHALKTON, a parish in the hundred
of FINCH-DEAN, Alton (South) division of the
county of SOUTHAMPTON, 5 miles (S. S. W.) from
Petersfield, containing, with the chapelry of Ids-worth,
559 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, with that of
Clanfield united, in the archdeaconry and diocese of
Winchester, rated in the king's books at £20. 0. 10.,
and in the patronage of the Provost and Fellows of
King's. College, Cambridge. The church is dedicated to
St. Michael.
