CHAPEL-HILL, a parish in the upper division of the hundred of RAGLAND, county of MONMOUTH, 4% miles (N.) from Chepstow, containing 464 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Llandaff, endowed with £800 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Duke of Beaufort. Within this parish stood the stately abbey of Tinternc, founded by Walter de Clare, in 1141, for Cistercian monks, and dedicated to St. Mary: its revenue, at the time of the dissolution, was estimated at £256. 11. 6. The ruins present a picturesque object on the margin of the river Wye, in a district abounding with fine scenery; they consist of nearly the entire walls of the splendid church, in a style forming a transition from the early English to the decorated, and are remarkable for harmony of design and delicacy of execution.
