CHARNEY, a chapelry in that part of the parish of LONGWORTH which is in the hundred of GANFIELD, county of BERKS, 4 miles (N. by W.) from Wantage, containing 243 inhabitants. The chapel is dedicated to St. Peter. In the vicinity is a circular fortification, called Cherbury Castle, surrounded by a double trench, resembling that of Badbury in Dorsetshire, and traditionally said to have been a castle belonging to Canute the Great.
