CHAWTON, a parish in the hundred of ALTON, Alton (North) division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 1 mile (S. S. W.) from Alton, containing 417 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £11. 5. 5., and in the patronage of Edward Knight, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas. One of the sources of the river Wey is in this parish. The village is situated in a valley watered by land springs, called Lavants, which occasionally spread over the adjacent lands.
