CHECKLEY, a parish in the southern, division of the hundred of TOTMONSLOW, county of STAFFORD, 5 miles (N. W. by W.) from Uttoxeter, containing, with the hamlet of Tean, and the liberty of Madeley-Holme, 2070 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Stafford, and diocese of Lichfield and Coventry, rated in the king's books at £20.2. 6., and in the patronage of Thomas Hutchinson, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. Mary and All Saints, is an ancient structure, and contains a fine marble tomb, with recumbent figures. There are places of worship for Independents and Wesleyan Methodists. A large tape-manufactory, supposed to be the most extensive of its kind in Europe, was established here in 1748, the proprietors of which, aided by a trifling annuity, support schools for children of both sexes. A fair is held on Easter-Tuesday.
