CHELFORD, a chapelry in the parish of PRESTBURY,
hundred of MACCLESFIELD, county palatine of
CHESTER, 5 miles (S. B. by E.) from Knutsford, containing
203 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy,
in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chester, endowed
with £600 private benefaction, and £600 royal bounty,
and in the patronage of Mr. Parker. The chapel was
rebuilt in 1776. Five roads meet in the village; and the
Birtles and Henbury brooks unite immediately below the
chapel, forming a fine sheet of water, which empties itself
into a brook called Peover-leye. A school was built
by the late Rev. John Parker, who endowed it with
about £ 17 per annum.
