CHIDDINGSTONE, a parish in the hundred of SOMERDEN, lathe of SUTTON at HONE, county of KENT, 7 miles (-W. by S.) fro.m Tollbridge, containing 1096 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the exempt deanery of Shoreham, and in the peculiar jurisdiction and patronage of the Archbishop of Canterbury, rated in the king's books at £28. 9. 4. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, has considerable portions in the later style of English architecture. This parish lies in the Weald; in the Textus Roffensis, it is called Cidingstane; in other records it is termed Chiding-stone, froin a large stone, supposed from its name to have been the spot where judicial affairs were transacted. It is bounded on the south by a branch of the Medway, and is intersected by the river Eden, about a mile south of which, on an eminence, is the village, which is usually called High-street.
