CHILDREY, a parish in the hundred of WANTAGE, county of BERKS, %\ miles (W.) from Wantage, con* taming 478 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £33.14. 7., and in the patronage of the President and Fellows of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, has remnants of Norman architecture, and contains several ancient monuments. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. Here is an endowed school, Almshouses for three poor men were founded by William Fettiplace, Esq., who was a generous benefactor to Queen's College, Oxford. The Wilts and Berks canal passes through this parish, above which runs IcJcletonway, part of the Iknield-street. Charles I., escorted by his own troop, took up his quarters at the village, on the night of April 10th, 1664.
