CHILTON, a hamlet in the parish of CLARE, hundred of RISBRIDGE, county of SUFFOLK, 1 mile (w. by N.) from Clare. The population is returned with the parish. Here was formerly a chapel, now demolished. A small priory of Augustine canons, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, was founded here; but the income not exceeding £10 per annum, and the buildings becoming dilapidated, it was given, in 1468, to the Dean and Chapter of the college of Stoke: the remains have been converted into a dwelling-house.
