CHILTON-TRINITY, a parish in the northern division of the hundred of PETHERTON, county of SOMERSET, 1 mile (N. by W.) from Bridg-water, containing 49 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, united to the vicarage of Bridg-water, in the archdeaconry of Taunton, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's books at £7. 0. 2., and in the patronage of the Crown. The church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is a neat structure covered with lead, with a towerrebuilt in 1728. This is a place of great antiquity, having formerly given name to a hundred, called' Chilton-Trinitatis. There is an endowment in land, given by Edward Colston, for a charity school. The navigable river Parret runs on the eastern side of the parish; and the neighbourhood contains a great quantity of coal lying beneath a stony stratum, here called mark, on which, when split, impressions of fern and other plants are visible; much of the coal is tinged with sulphur, and in one mine a considerable quantity; of lead-ore was found adhering to it.
