CHIPCHASE, a chapelry in the parish of CHOLLERTON, north-eastern division of TINDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 9 miles (N. N.W.) from Hexham, containing, with the township of Gunnerton, 409 inhabitants. The chapel was rebuilt in 1732, by John Reed, Esq., on the lawn of Chipchase Castle, a large and beautiful structure standing upon a lofty eminence, at the foot of which flows the North Tyne: of the ancient building only a tower remains; its roof rests on corbels, and has openings for missiles, or scalding water, to be thrown upon an enemy; some tattered fragments of paintings on the walls are exceedingly curious.
