CHIRTON, a township in the parish of TYNEMOUTH, eastern division of CASTLE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 1 mile (W.S.W.) from North Shields, containing 4351 inhabitants. The village is situated on the western side of the town of North Shields, and has increased upwards of three-fourths in size and population since 1811, owing chiefly to the extension of the coal-works, from which railways have been formed to the Tyne: at the north end of it is a buryingground belonging to the Jews.
