CHRISTOW, a parish in the hundred of WONFORD,
county of DEVON, 5 miles (N.N.W.) from Chudleigh,
containing 531 inhabitants.  The living is a discharged
vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter,
rated in the king's books at £8. 6. 8., endowed with
£200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and
in the patronage of Viscount Exmouth. The church,
dedicated to St. James, has a Norman font, and some
fine screen-work across the nave and aisles. In this
neighbourhood are many excellent cherry orchards.
Pope House is said to have been a cell to the priory of
Cowick, near Exeter.
