CLAREBOROUGH, a parish in the North-clay division of the wapentake of BASSETLAW, county of NOTTINGHAM, 2 miles (N. E.byE.) from East Retford, containing 1929 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £9. 15. 4., and in the patronage of the Duke of Devonshire. The ohurch, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is a small edifice, built by Sewell, Archbishop of York, in 1258. The Chesterfield canal passes through the parish. At Bolam are the remains of an ancient chapel, and some caves hewn in the rock, in which many of the inhabitants reside.
