CLAYDON (EAST), a parish in the hundred of
ASHENDON, county of BUCKINGHAM, 2 miles (S. W.
by W.) from Winslow, containing, with Bottle-Claydon,
339 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage,
in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of
Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £7. 17., and in
the patronage of Mrs. Verney. The church, which was
dedicated to St. Mary, was demolished during the parliamentary
war, by Cornelius Holland, one of the judges
who sat upon the trial of Charles I. In 1673, Maurice
Griffith left a trifling endowment for the education of
two boys, and for apprenticing one of them every six
years.
